The 4th Estonian Zero Waste Conference will bring together experts, businesses, academics, and activists in Tallinn to tackle a big question: How do we change systems?

While previous editions focused on showcasing circular economy solutions already in place, this year’s theme shifts to the bigger picture – understanding what enables large-scale societal transformation and what still holds us back.

“Last year we saw that circular solutions exist, but they often struggle to break through in a linear economy. That’s why this year we’re looking into how systemic change actually happens and what barriers need to be dismantled” explains conference content manager Kadri Kalle from Zero Waste Estonia.

The event will be opened by social change consultant Martin A. Noorkõiv, who will frame the discussion on systems transformation. Key speakers include Esra Tat (Executive Director, Zero Waste Europe), Nathan Dufour (Reuse Systems Manager, Zero Waste Europe), Triin Vihalemm and Margit Keller (University of Tartu), Margot Roose (Deputy Mayor of Tallinn), and many more.

This year, the organisation of the conference is also supported by Zero Waste Europe, a leading network advocating for waste reduction and circular economy across the continent. According to Marianne Sepp, Executive Director of Zero Waste Estonia, the international community makes it possible to exchange practices and experiences—learning from others while also showcasing Estonia’s progress. “With its Brussels-based advocacy, Zero Waste Europe is a key ally in driving systemic change at the European level. We are glad that through this conference we can contribute to these discussions while also bringing in the Estonian perspective”, Sepp adds.

Over two days, participants will engage in hands-on workshops, discussions, and a unique Living Library format, where they can interact directly with organisations pioneering change in mindset, practices, and business models.

“This is not just another conference. It’s a chance to rethink how transformation really happens – not only supporting new initiatives but also dismantling the structures and mindsets that hold us back”, says Martin A. Noorkõiv.
