Environmental Association Za Zemiata

Za Zemiata (ZZ) is an independent non-profit non-governmental organization established in 1995 to work for environmental justice and sustainable and equitable life on our planet, without exploitation of people or nature. Za Zemiata promotes sustainable solutions in energy and climate, zero waste practices, food sovereignty and organic farming, air quality and urban environment, strategic use of public funds to drive environmental protection and long-term wellbeing for people and other species alike.

We work through awareness raising and capacity building to mobilise and empower local communities to take action on a variety of environmental conflicts, e.g. unsustainable energy projects, air pollution, mining (gold, uranium, coal), waste incineration and landfills, damage of protected areas, tax justice, etc. We reach out to over 200 schools from all across Bulgaria with resource- and energy-saving initiatives and practical activities, using our teaching toolkits on energy and climate, smart waste management, food sovereignty and globalisation.

Victories and key actions

A selection of the latest achievements of our member...
  • We found more support for our campaign against the incinerator in Sofia - on one side there is now a team of activists who help us with the court cases, social media and communication with the EU institutions. On the other side many more citizens realized the problem and they participated in a big protest in May and in the public consultations in the municipality.
  • Organisation of the first meeting of over 30 people and groups who run their own Zero Waste and Plastic free campaigns: we are hopefully going to create a Zero Waste movement in Bulgaria
  • Successful Plastic Free campaign: many events and workshops with a growing audience and a better media coverage

Main focus and objectives

A selection of the expected results of our member...
  • Continue with the anti-incineration campaigns to stop the project for a huge incinerator in Sofia and also to stop many projects around the country for co-incineration of waste and coal in the old coal plants
  • Work on the new Single Use Plastics Directive and its transposition on a national level, as well as on monitoring the transposition of the Circular economy package
