Joint statement – PPWR enters into application, we call for ambitious implementation

The Rethink Plastic Alliance and Break Free From Plastic movement welcomed the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) taking effect on 12 August 2026, which bans PFAS “forever chemicals” in food-contact packaging and sets the stage for future reuse and waste-reduction rules. In their joint statement, spokespeople from ECOS, Zero Waste Europe, and the European Environmental Bureau urged Member States to implement the law ambitiously, calling it a model for the EU’s upcoming Circular Economy Act.
