As of 2025, the separate collection of textile waste will become mandatory in the EU. For many municipalities, this means they have to make changes to their waste collection systems.

‘How to collect textile waste in cities?’ is a guide for municipalities asking six central questions for the successful introduction of a separate collection system that respects the waste hierarchy and supports a system of local reuse.

While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, we have identified key success factors local decision-makers should consider, from Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), over stakeholder engagement, to technical questions about the collection.
