ZWE at COP30: Utilising MRBT and bio-waste solutions to combat methane in the waste sector

ZWE will participate in COP30 to present strategies for mitigating methane emissions by diverting biowaste from landfills and ensuring proper pre-treatment of waste through biostabilisation and improved sorting to recover recyclables still commonly present in mixed waste.

During COP, we will present our findings and insights at two separate events: the first on 11 November in the Super Pollutants Solutions Pavilion and the second on 12 November in the Nordic Pavilion – details for each event can be found below.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Preventing methane and powering change: Global bio-waste and biogas solutions for a climate-safe future

Date: 11 November  (11:00-12:00)

Location: Super Pollutants Solutions Pavilion

Format: Side event at COP30

Description:

This session explores how effective biowaste management and biogas production can deliver rapid methane reductions, contributing directly to the Paris Agreement and the Global Methane Pledge. Drawing on the EU’s LIFE BIOBEST project and the #MakingBiogasHappen programme, it will demonstrate the pathways to scale up sciencebased solutions for diverting organic waste from landfills and transforming it into renewable energy. The discussion will link EU and international experiences to foster cooperation between governments, civil society, and industry in achieving nearterm climate impact.

MRBT Fast track climate solution for residual waste: Shifting from post-landfill capture to pre-landfill methane prevention

Date: 12 November 2025  (15:30-17:00)

Location: Nordic Pavilion

Format: Side event at COP30

Description:

This session will showcase how shifting from post-landfill gas capture to pre-landfill methane prevention through pretreatment can drastically reduce emissions, recover resources, and foster circularity. By highlighting Material Recovery and Biological Treatment (MRBT) as a proven, scalable solution, the session will explore how pretreatment systems prevent methane formation at the source while enabling resource recovery and reducing reliance on fossil-based energy.

Speakers will present Nordic and global experiences that demonstrate how MRBT contributes to climate-neutral waste systems, supports the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and advances the Nordic vision for sustainable, low-carbon societies. The discussion will also address financing mechanisms, policy frameworks, and international cooperation needed to accelerate the transition from end-of-pipe landfill management to proactive methane prevention across regions.
