About the webinar

Join us on this webinar to discover and discuss the joint Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) and Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) “The Case of Extended Producer Responsibility for food products” study.

Moderated by BIC’s Marco Rupp, the webinar will take place two days after the study’s launch, and will include:

  • A presentation of the study by its author, ZWE’s Joan Marc Simon, showing how Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for food products could be organised.
  • A rapid-fire debate with the panellists.
  • A Q&A moment with the audience.

What will you learn in this webinar?

Europeans generate an average of 130kg of food waste every year. Much of this waste could be prevented, and what is not prevented should be separately collected to return nutrients to the European soils. This is why the EU mandated that municipalities should collect all food waste, and for Member States to reduce the amount of food waste generated. However, less than 1/4 of food waste is separately collected, and without funding for prevention and separate collection, none of this will happen. This is why BIC and ZWE explored how food producers could help cofinance the prevention and collection of food waste to:

  • Meet the EU targets.
  • Bring back nutrients to the soil and capture valuable minerals, such as phosphorus, which we currently burn or landfill.
