In recent years, we have seen a number of developments that would suggest decision-makers recognise that waste incineration is incompatible with long-term climate goals. Yet does this match with the reality on the ground? Are we still living through a time of waste incineration within a linear economy, or are we entering an age of decommissioning?
This webinar will go into greater depth to answer these key questions:
- Why is waste incineration incompatible with a circular economy and how is this becoming more recognised?
- Is waste incineration compatible with the increasing need for and adoption of climate supportive, carbon-neutral policies?
- What is happening at the European level to prohibit funding and support for increasing incineration capacity?
- What are the transition strategies available for municipalities to help move away from incineration?

Sirpa Pietikäinen is a Finnish member of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament since 2008. She is a former Finnish Minister of Environment (1991-1995). Her career at the Finnish parliament is extensive, ranging from the year 1983 to 2003. Within her work, she seeks to combine her two specialities, that of environment and economics. At the European Parliament, Ms. Pietikäinen is a member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and the Women’s Right and Gender Equality Committee as well as a substitute member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. A graduate from the Helsinki School of Economics, Ms. Pietikäinen holds MSc in Business, and teaches university courses on negotiations theory and practices. She is active in several organisations, her positions of trust including Chairmanship of the Globe EU.

Will is a carbon and GHG modelling specialist at Eunomia. An engineer by background, he has worked on several key waste-carbon projects like examining the impact of policy changes on residual waste compositions and novel technologies like waste to jet fuel. More broadly, Will is part of Eunomia’s Climate Emergency team, whose work ranges from pushing for policy changes in the carbon offset space to helping local authorities set ambitious and clear Net Zero strategies.

Janek joined Zero Waste Europe in August 2015. As Development and Policy Coordinator, he manages the relationship with Zero Waste Europe’s funders and leads on climate and energy policy advocacy work towards EU institutions. Previously, he worked for the Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) in Brussels where he coordinated fundraising efforts on behalf of FoEE and its 6 programmes. Prior to the FoEE, Janek worked for the Justice and Environment (J&E) where he provided leadership for the development of strategic partnerships. He holds an Msc in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Central European University and Postgraduate degree in Charity Marketing from Cass Business School. Janek has worked in Spain and Guatemala and speaks fluent Spanish.

Enzo Favoino is a technical expert and researcher at the Scuola Agraria del Parco di Monza (Italy) and has decades of experience in the separate waste collection, recycling, composting and prevention. He is an expert in EU waste legislation and is highly knowledgeable in the field of European policy-making. He is one of the founders of the European Compost Network and the coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Zero Waste Research Centre in Italy.

Director of Global Strategy
Mariel is currently driving the global work of Zero Waste Europe as Director of Global Strategy, building bridges and identifying opportunities for collaboration across borders to promote zero waste policies and practices with members worldwide. Prior to this role, between 2014-2019 she was the Managing Director of Zero Waste Europe, during its foundation and early development. Before 2014 she was the lead climate policy campaigner for the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA). Today she continues to guide GAIA’s work on zero waste project guidelines for major sources of climate finance, and international energy policy with impacts on the waste sector. She has extensive experience in research, publication development and project management. Key recent publications include ‘Zero Waste Circular Economy: A Systemic Game-Changer to Climate Change’. Mariel has a BA in Sociology from the University of Barcelona, a MA in Discourse Analysis and Argumentation from the University of Amsterdam, and a MA in Social Communication Studies from the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.
