Chemical recycling is the new buzzword we keep hearing from different stakeholders, being them industry, policy officers or concerned activists.
Zero Waste Europe has recently released a study to share some light into the topic. With this webinar we move a step further in trying to understand what we refer to when we say chemical recycling, what are its pro and cons and if it could fit into a circular economy.
The speakers represent three different angles in the discussion: the industry already testing chemical recycling, the European Commission Directorate General for Environment working on waste management and the environmental NGO sector evaluating chemical recycling suitability for a circular economy.
This webinar will examine some key questions:

- Is it really recycling?
- Comparative analysis with mechanical recycling
- The current state of the technology: advantages and drawbacks
- Policy status and challenges

Joan Marc is based in Brussels where he directs the work of Zero Waste Europe. He has been a leading voice for Zero Waste in Europe since 2007 and he is a regular keynote speaker in many industry and NGO meetings in Brussels but also at local level as well as internationally. He is member of the Steering Committee of the Break Free from Plastics movement. Among many other publications he has authored the Zero Waste Masterplan for cities as well as the book “Zero Waste – How to reactivate the economy without trashing the planet”. With a background in Economics, he has more than 10 years of experience working with governmental and non-governmental organisations in the field of good governance, new economics, social justice, and environment.

Rozalina Petrova joined the Directorate General for Environment of the European Commission in 2010 to work on the EU transition to a resource efficient and circular economy. She was also responsible for sustainable development, green jobs and mainstreaming of environmental policy in economic affairs. Since 2015 she has been working on policies to increase the recycling of waste and its use as a raw material.

Jack has an educational background in international relations having studied at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. For the past 5 years, he has worked for two different NGOs within the international development and sustainability sectors, helping to build movements and communities for change. He has led successful campaigns at the local level within the UK as well as at the global level at institutions such as the United Nations. Jack will be leading our work with municipalities, helping to connect members from across Europe to build and contribute towards the transition of cities towards zero waste strategies.
