LIFE BIOBEST exchanges with the European Commission in Brussels

Bio-wasteLIFE BIOBESTWaste Policy
On 26 March, members of the LIFE BIOBEST project team gathered in Brussels for a hybrid meeting with representatives from the Directorate-General for Environment under the European Commission. This exchange comes at a critical moment, as the EU works to improve bio-waste management practices across Member States and ensure proper implementation of the separate collection mandate that came into force in January 2024.

The meeting brought together the five partner organisations making up the LIFE BIOBEST Consortium and key members of the Bio-Waste, Soil, and Circular Economy units. This strategic gathering provided an excellent opportunity to present the main conclusions and proposals from our Comprehensive Guidance for effective bio-waste management in the EU.

During the discussion, our team emphasised several critical aspects of bio-waste management:

  • The fundamental importance of bio-waste in the circular economy
  • The need for strengthening the legal framework
  • The value of promoting concrete targets
  • The role of economic and fiscal instruments
  • The necessity of improved monitoring systems
  • The importance of quality products and reliable markets

The meeting facilitated a productive exchange on how our proposals might be integrated within the framework of the Circular Economy Act and other policies currently undergoing revision. The Commission representatives posed thoughtful questions about specific subtopics and the relationship between the legal framework and the practical implementation of measures, including related challenges and barriers.

This engagement with Commission representatives represents a significant milestone for the LIFE BIOBEST project as we work toward our mission of mainstreaming best bio-waste management and recycling practices across Europe.
