An inspiration in environmental impact: celebrating 2024 Earthshot Prize finalist GAYO
At Zero Waste Europe (ZWE), we believe that lasting change grows from grassroots action—one community at a time. This belief has guided our journey, from promoting zero waste solutions across Europe to our work within the broader global movement. As both a previous nominee and a nominator for the Earthshot Prize 2025 edition, we’ve experienced firsthand how this platform can amplify local environmental solutions to achieve global impact.
That’s why we’re particularly excited to celebrate when members of our movement receive such recognition.
Our colleagues at Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), a dynamic member of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), have been selected as a 2024 finalist for the prestigious Earthshot Prize. Their achievement not only validates their remarkable commitment to addressing some of our planet’s biggest environmental challenges, but also showcases the transformative power and the global impact of local actions.
The Earthshot Prize: recognising transformative environmental solutions
Launched by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2020, the Earthshot Prize was created as a response to the urgent environmental challenges of our time. Each year, the Prize honours extraordinary projects worldwide that contribute to one of five Earthshots:
- Protect and Restore Nature;
- Clean Our Air;
- Revive Our Oceans;
- Build a Waste-Free World;
- Fix Our Climate.
With its annual $1 million award for each winning solution, the Prize serves as a spotlight and financial catalyst for scaling environmental actions that drive impactful change.
A nominator’s role: identifying and uplifting visionary leaders
Each year, a network of Earthshot nominators—including ZWE for the 2025 edition —searches the globe for visionary leaders and organisations capable of creating a more sustainable and fairer future. This role allows us to champion projects that align deeply with our mission and values.
We take pride in supporting nominees like GAYO, whose work demonstrates the power of grassroots action. Our role goes beyond nomination: we’re committed to amplifying these solutions and inspiring communities worldwide to embrace sustainable change.
GAYO and the redefinition of sustainability in Ghana
With a mission to build resilient communities, GAYO empowers young people through climate and environmental education, sustainable waste management practices, and community-led initiatives. Their work tackles plastic pollution head-on, champions composting, and brings circular economy principles to life through practical, community-based solutions.
Their selection as an Earthshot Prize finalist represents more than organizational success—it shows how grassroots initiatives can drive systemic change. As members of GAIA, GAYO work echoes the principles of zero waste and circular economy that we champion here at ZWE.
Anticipating the 2024 Earthshot Prize winners
As we await the final announcement of the winners on 6 November 6 2024, our excitement builds not just for GAYO but for the future of community-led environmental action.
No matter the outcome, GAYO’s story inspires everyone to work toward a more sustainable future. Above all, this moment celebrates their achievements and keeps us posted on their future victories.
We are honoured to stand alongside them in the global zero waste movement, and to continue our work to create a world without waste.
