The Story of PHENIX: A recipe to effectively enforce food waste reduction targets

Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Brussels 12/06/2019

Zero Waste Europe releases today its new Consumption & Production Case Study, which promotes Zero Waste business models:

The Story of PHENIX, a winning solution that effectively fights food waste while creating jobs and saving money to businesses and individuals.

The publication reports how in 5 years, PHENIX saved 30.000 tonnes of food products and distributed 60 millions meals across France

and proves that it is possible to track food waste reduction efforts, hence making food waste reduction targets enforceable.

According to Pierre Condamine, Zero Waste Europe’s Waste Policy Officer,

The case of PHENIX shows that we now have concrete tools to set but also to reach European food waste reduction targets”.

The publication also highlights some of the challenges that food waste prevention still has to face. Among these, the fact that the traditional

waste management system does not encourage businesses to prevent food from being wasted.

The creation of incentives for businesses to pay for the waste they produce is key in fighting food waste, and consequently

in reducing CO2 emissions and unnecessary use of resources. Implementing the ‘polluter pays’ principle would contribute to level the playing field

between a traditional waste management system and effective waste prevention”, added Condamine.

This document is part of a new series of case studies where Zero Waste Europe showcases change-making initiatives from cities, companies

and individuals that are challenging and transforming current business models towards a more sustainable use of resources.
